Stall Catchers - Terms and Privacy Policy

GENERAL TERMS

Stall Catchers, HCinst.org, EyesOnALZ and Catchathon.com by the Human Computation Institute (HCI) mobilize an online community of volunteers (“catchers”) who analyze research data by playing a game of annotating blood vessels. Catchers have access to information about dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), reduced blood flow in the brain and its relationship to AD, and discuss the implications of their annotations on AD research. Data collected from catchers is used to advance medical disease research, and to help devise better ways for humans and computers to work together to accomplish challenging tasks. At the same time, Stall Catchers is committed to preserving the privacy of its members, and fostering a growing community of volunteer researchers.

By accessing the Stall Catchers website (the “Site,” defined as all pages at stallcatchers.com, eyesonalz.com, catchathon.com and their subdomains), you agree to be bound by the terms described on this page.

If you are less than 18 years of age, your parent or guardian must read, explain, and agree to the terms.

The project may terminate, suspend, or block your account at any time. This may be done, for example, if you:

  • engage in abusive behavior;
  • create a false identity;
  • disseminate or transmit spam, advertisements, or solicitations;
  • post material that infringes a copyright, trademark or patent right, trade secret or other legal right of any person, corporation or institution;
  • collect, print out, reproduce, distribute, or otherwise make available or use any personally-identifiable information about other users; disseminate or transmit viruses, Trojan horses, worms, defects, date bombs, time bombs, malware, spyware, or other items of a destructive nature or any other malicious code or program;
  • use the Site in any manner that could damage or overburden other sites;
  • use the Site in any manner that would interfere with any other party’s use of the Site.

HCI reserves the right to change this Agreement at any time. By accessing Stall Catchers after modifications have been posted, you agree to be bound by the modified terms.


USING THE CHAT AND OTHER COMMUNICATION TOOLS

If you use our live chatbox, vessel comments and/or other communication tools on the Site, you agree to the following terms:

  • The chatbox is public and visible to all logged in Stall Catchers users.
  • Users of the Site comprise an international and multicultural community with different tolerances and sensitivities. All users are expected to be kind and respectful.
  • All users are expected to adhere to these additional rules:
    • no swearing
    • no spamming or scamming
    • don't impersonate admin
    • no cursing or profanity
    • no discrimination
    • no advertising
    • no arguments with others or admin
  • We reserve the right to hide messages, mute and ban users if these rules are disrespected.
  • We rely on all users to report any abuse. To report a case of abuse, send an email to info@stallcatchers.com. Please add the username of the abusive user, the date and time of the post. That will help us find the post in the database and act upon it. Note that we never discuss our interventions.

DATA WE COLLECT

When you register for the Site you consent to your participation data and your personal data to be collected and used as described below.

We collect your participation data, including movies analyzed, individual performance statistics, time spent in the game, and other in-game behavior metrics. You grant permission to Human Computation Institute to make any use of these data. However, you give this permission non-exclusively, meaning that you still own your contribution.

When you register for the Site, you will have to provide an email address and create a username. If you register with an existing Facebook or Google+ account, your username will be generated in the following matter: Name_Surname, as it appears on your Facebook or Google+ account when you register. You can change your username in your Profile page at any time.

If you wish to remain anonymous on and outside the Site (see “USING, STORING AND SHARING YOUR DATA”, you may prefer to choose a username that reveals no personal information about you. Please pick an appropriate username. No profanity, political, sexual, drug, or overly violent references should be included in usernames or used anywhere on the site. We reserve the right to change usernames. In this case you may be notified and be offered the chance to pick a new name that complies with these terms of service.

If you use our live chat, vessel comments and/or other communication tools, we record all the messages you post and when they are posted, and store this information indefinitely in our database. We collect no other data via the chatbox and other communication tools.

If you choose to engage in Registration-Only Activities through a Facebook or Google account, the Site accesses certain information about you and your contacts. Such information may include your entries in the following personal data fields: name, profile picture, gender, networks, your user ID (the email address you use to access Facebook or your Google email address), your list of friends and any other information you have made available to the public through Facebook or Google. We will comply with the requirements of Facebook’s Privacy Policy regarding any personal information the Site obtains from Facebook or Google. Such information will not be disclosed by us to third parties.

Your usage of the Site may be monitored to collect data that helps us improve the Site. Data such as the following may be logged:

  • your IP Address,
  • your username,
  • URL requests, including time, method, and status code,
  • URL that referred you to the Site,
  • number of bytes transferred,
  • web browser, operating system, and hardware platform, and
  • your online activity on the Site

Stall Catchers uses Google Analytics and User ID as tools to optimize the website and the acquisition channels. User ID allows Stall Catchers to connect multiple devices, sessions, and engagement data. However, Stall Catchers does not use this service to track, collect or upload to Google any data that personally identifies you. You may wish to consult Google Privacy Policy & Principles. You can opt-out of making your site activity available to Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Data such as the following may be collected:

  • Device
  • Country
  • Languages
  • Movie annotations
  • Sessions

Stall Catchers employs Linode analytic services to collect and analyze data about site usage that should not be personally identifiable. Click here to view their privacy policies. Your anonymized usage data may be shared with others for research purposes.

Stall Catchers may place small files on your computer's hard drive known as a “cookies,” in order to personalize your visits to the Site. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you may prefer to modify your browser settings to decline them. If you decline cookies from Stall Catchers then functionality may be impaired.

Stall Catchers reserves the right to record all public communications on the Site, including the vessel comments, dedication board and other pages on the site, and the forum. Note that we are unable to prevent any third party from independently logging public communications on the Site.

To learn more about our community, we may email or post surveys on the Site or via email inquiring about demographic information or other topics. Participation in these surveys is voluntary.


USING, STORING AND SHARING YOUR DATA

Your participation data is collected to further scientific research and to improve the Site. If at any time you wish to withdraw your personal information from the Site, your anonymized participation data will continue to be stored.

Your username will be visible in the leaderboards, dedications page, and other locations on the site. Your username may also appear in publications, presentations, promotional materials, and other locations outside the Site.

By using the public chatbox and other communication tools you give permission to HCI to store and use the content you post on the Site. This content may be shared with partners, across social media channels etc. However, we will seek to protect your anonymity in all cases and never share any personal information without your additional consent. Note that this does not include your username, which could be attached to the content we share.

When you register, you will have the option to agree to receive tips and information from Stall Catchers via email. You can accept or refuse these emails at any time via your Profile page, or the unsubscribe link in the emails you receive.

When and/or after you register, you will have the option to agree to receive materials from the BrightFocus Foundation via email or create a SciStarter account. In each of those cases, your email address and participation data may be shared with those project partners.

Aside from employing third-party email delivery services and as per the above exceptions, HCI will not reveal your email address to others. These third-party services maintain their own privacy policies.

Data associated with your username or your IP address will not be disclosed to third parties except in very limited circumstances when complying with law or legal process, working with consultants assisting us with fixing or improving the Site, or monitoring and improving the security of our network. Even in these exceptional cases, we will attempt to preserve your privacy.


DATA RETENTION

When you register for the Site we will maintain your personal information unless and until you ask us to delete this information.

Your participation data will be maintained even if and when your personal information is deleted from the Site. In this case, participation data will be fully anonymized.


GDPR COMPLIANCE AND YOUR RIGHTS

The Human Computation Institute is committed to protecting your personal information stored on the Site. We respect your privacy, and your right to withdraw some or all of your personal data from the Site.

If you are a European resident, your personal data rights have changed under The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679. Please find below a summary of the rights you have under the GDPR:

  • the right to access
  • the right to rectification
  • the right to erasure
  • the right to restrict processing
  • the right to object to processing
  • the right to data portability
  • the right to complain to a supervisory authority
  • the right to withdraw consent

By registering on the Site, you consent to your data being managed and retained in accordance to this Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

If you are a European resident we note that we are storing and processing your information in order to to further scientific research and to improve the Site. Additionally, please note that your information will be transferred outside of Europe, including United States.

You have the right to access personal information we hold about you and to ask that your personal information be corrected, updated, or deleted. If you would like to exercise this right, please contact us through the contact information below.

DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY/ LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

Stall Catchers is a part of the EyesOnALZ project of the Human Computation Institute (HCI) and its research partners. You agree that your use of the Site shall be at your own sole risk. To the fullest extent permitted by the law, HCI disclaims all warranties, express or implied, in connection with the Site and your use thereof. HCI makes no warranties or representations about the accuracy or completeness of the Site’s content (including User-Generated Content and Third-Party Content) or the content of any websites linked to this Site and assumes no liability or responsibility for any (1) errors, mistakes, or inaccuracies in content; (2) personal injury or property damage, of any nature whatsoever, resulting from your access to and use of the Site; (3) any unauthorized access to or use of HCI’s secure servers and/or any and all personal information and/or financial information stored therein; (4) any interruption or cessation of transmission to or from the Site; (5) any bugs, viruses, Trojan horses, or the like that may be transmitted to or through the Site by any third party; and/ or (6) any errors or omissions in any content or any loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of the use of any content posted, emailed, transmitted, or otherwise made available via the Site. You assume all risk as to the quality, function, and performance of the Site, and to all transactions you undertake on the Site, including without limitation submission of any User-Generated Content.

You agree that HCI will not be liable to you for any loss or damages, either actual or consequential, arising out of or relating to these terms, or your (or any third party’s) use or inability to use the Site, or your placement of User-Generated Content on the Site, or your reliance upon information obtained from or through the Site, or your communications with other users of the Site. In particular, HCI will have no liability for any consequential, indirect, punitive, special or incidental damages, whether foreseeable or unforeseeable, (including, but not limited to, claims for defamation, errors, loss of data, or interruption in availability of data), arising out of or relating to these terms, your use or inability to use a site, your placement of content on the Site, your reliance upon information obtained from or through a Site, or your communications with other users of the Site, whether based in contract, tort, statutory or other law, except only in the case of death or personal injury where and only to the extent that applicable law requires such liability.


INDEMNIFICATION

You hereby indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Human Computation Institute and all its project partners, affiliates, employees, faculty members, fellows, students, members of their governing boards and agents (collectively, the “Indemnified Parties”) from and against any and all liability and costs, including, without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees, incurred by the Indemnified Parties in connection with any claim arising out of any breach by you or any user of your account of this User Agreement or the foregoing representations, warranties and covenants. You shall cooperate as fully as reasonably required in the defense of any such claim. HCI reserves the right, at its own expense, to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter subject to indemnification by you.
